In her children's book, A Dog Named Gumbo, award-winning author Mary Esparza-Vela addresses a life situation that can sometimes be difficult to deal with in children's books through a true story. Leo is a man who lived alone and seldom left his home. When his sister and niece bring him a puppy for his birthday, he doesn't want it but agrees to a 2-week trial. In that time, Gumbo, as Leo named him, won Leo's heart and the two became inseperable. When Leo dies in a car accident, Gumbo dissappears from the scene. Will they be able to find Gumbo?
Denis Proulx does an excellent job in telling the story through his illustrations. This book is recommended for ages 6-12.
